A quarterback releases the ball with his team favored by 2.5. The market freezes. A defender intercepts it and scores; seconds later, the spread reopens with the former favorite getting 4.5. That seven-point swing is not merely the price of the touchdown.

The book is recalculating the entire game state: score differential, possession, field position, time remaining, timeouts, extra-point result, and each team’s expected number of future drives. A pick-six also erases the offense’s scoring opportunity and usually hands it the next possession after the kickoff. This explains why NFL lines move by different amounts after superficially similar plays. A touchdown early in the first quarter leaves substantial time for underlying team quality to reassert itself; the same touchdown late in the fourth can dominate the projection.

The posted spread is ultimately a market-clearing price. Sportsbooks blend model output with incoming bets, sharp action, liability, liquidity, and limits, sometimes adjusting the spread and sometimes only the vig.     Still ahead 7-0 with 3:20 left in the first quarter, the favorite throws an interception from the underdog’s 8. The underdog now possesses the ball near its own 10; the erased scoring opportunity matters, although poor field position limits the swing.

  4. Halftime tie: Favorite -2.5

    At 10-10 with 30:00 left, the favorite is set to receive the second-half kickoff, likely near its own 25. That possession edge can preserve favoritism when betting an NFL halftime line, but less time remains for team-strength differences to emerge.

  5. Late short field: Favorite -4.5

    At 20-20 with 4:20 remaining, the underdog fumbles at its own 28. The favorite’s possession, immediate scoring range, and ability to drain clock create a sharp move despite no change to the scoreboard.
